Equal opportunity is a term used to suggest the raising of an environment in which people from different backgrounds, gender, minority groups, or ethnicity may have equal access to employment, education, health, and other privileges.
Some countries like the U.S. and the UK have incorporated equal opportunities law to protect the rights of its citizens in this respect. These laws imply that an equal opportunity employer shall invite application a job for everyone and make your choice based on merit and in all fairness, not hold a position of any person on grounds of gender or ethnicity.
Impact of the recession in employment based on gender
Previous recessions were characterized by an increase in employment of women in positions previously reserved for men. This trend was observed in the Western world during the 1930s and during the World War II. The current recession has however a different result. Two different trends have been observed in countries with developed economies compared to economies developing.
In the U.S., while a large part of men who lost their jobs returned to the labor market to find a job, a higher proportion women were employed or were employed again during the period. This was mainly due to the burgeoning field of health care is a female dominated field of employment.
In Canada, also a higher proportion of men lost their jobs. Again, this can be attributed to the results of the industries dominated by men who were affected by the recession, as the construction industry. Developed Europe also saw the same trend except UK, where, twice the number of women who lost their jobs or experienced pay cuts as opposed to men.
In developing countries the situation is not as easy to measure due to the absence of studies broken down by sex. However, it is evident by the type of work that has affected women have been the most affected by this recession.
During this time of economic recession, greater importance is given to those who can adapt, make the job faster, more efficiently and at a lower price. It is natural that employers seek to retain such persons as he let go of others. The competition is not between different gender, age, and skin color. Those who are willing to regroup and find the "new normal" may be the end.
Certain types of industries have shown that never dry up so the chances to go. Use this time to divert your skills in these channels. Using their full potential by honing their skills or develop other new to marketing is noticed by the employer even tired. There is speculation about the great gender imbalance seen in the brokerage industry and councils directors of banks that have collapsed – have done differently if women decision makers were present at crucial meetings? Some countries in Europe have % approved 40 seats for women in government. Only time will tell if this will benefit the collective decision making of nations.
