L-theanine is an amino acid that is unique in that it is almost exclusively found only in the plant used to make tea. All teas come from the same plant Camellia sinensis, and depending on how producers treat the leaves after cultivation determines which of the four basic types of true tea are tea black, oolong, green tea and white tea is drinking. The leaves to produce white tea is un-wilted and unoxidized, green tea are wilted and unoxidized, Oolong are withered, beaten, and partially oxidized and Black Tea are withered, rolled, and fully oxidized. This single amino acid L-theanine also known simply as theanine is also known as Suntheanine has been studied and found to produce relaxation and calm effects suggesting that produces these effects by increasing the level of gamma-amino butyric acid (GABA) production, caffeine decreases the production of GABA. Theanine also increases brain serotonin, dopamine, GABA levels and has micromolar affinities for AMPA, kainate and NMDA receptors. L-theanine crosses the blood brain barrier, this ability allows you to inhibit the excitotoxicity of glutamic acid, this is the pathological process by which nerve cells damaged and killed by glutamate and similar substances. The neurotransmitter glutamate induced toxicity is a major cause of degenerative brain diseases like multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer's disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), Parkinson's disease and Huntington's disease.
Other reported benefits of L-theanine are improving memory and learning abilities, its antioxidant properties, the function healthy cardiovascular and lower blood pressure.
In a study taking 200 mg of L-theanine showed that alpha waves, a type of brain waves, often detected by an electroencephalogram (EEG) or magnetoencephalography (MEG) and predominantly found to originate in the occipital lobe during periods of waking relaxation with the eyes closed. have been observed from the back of the top of the head of a person the occipital and parietal regions of the brain, and detected after 30 minutes.
