"Valerian is an effective sleep aid?

I have been having a terrible time, both falling and staying asleep. I've been reading about valerian and it seems like a more natural sleep aid.

Valerian root works very well for the purpose of relaxation, but for me it helped me lot with staying asleep. I found that some of the teas can be purchased in health food stores work better … some have other herbs in tea and Valeriana added for extra boost. Melatonin is also good .. but can not be used for the long term. Melatonin is a 5-methoxy-N-acetyltryptamine, and a hormone found naturally in most animals and some of the other living organisms, including algae and humans, at levels that vary in a daily cycle. Plays a role in regulating the circadian rhythm of several biological roles. Maybe just using this for a while would benefit in return a regular sleep habits.
