is it safe for babies to give cod liver oil?
my baby is 14 month old.he has rickets like symptoms.is it safe for babies to give cod liver oil?
from where we can buy cod liver oil?is it get from medical shop?
At the time my baby was 6 months old, his doctor said that since he’s breastfed, he needs to take a vitamin D supplement. I asked the Dr. if I could use cod liver oil instead of the liquid vitamins available for babies, and he told me yes. He then looked up some information on his computer, and said it’s okay to give from 1/2 tsp up to1 tsp (of the liquid form-specifically Carlson’s Cod Liver Oil); I give it to my baby via a medicine dropper.
My entire family has been using Carlson’s (lemon flavored) for 5 years, and we stay very healthy through the flu/cold seasons. It can be found online, and in health/whole food stores.
Everything I’ve learned/read suggests that cod liver oil is safe and healthy for babies. However, PLEASE CONSULT YOUR CHILD’S DOCTOR BEFORE GIVING ANY KIND OF SUPPLEMENTS! If your child really does have some sort of nutritional deficiency (vitamin d deficiency causes rickets), his needs may be VERY different from what his pediatrician would recommend for someone else’s child. Also, dosages for a breastfed vs. formula fed baby may be different as well. Body weight is also something to consider when deciding on a dosage; my son was about 17 pounds at 6 months.
PLEASE consult his doctor, get him checked out, and do some research before deciding what to do! Also, keep in mind that dosages and vitamin content vary for liquid vs.capsule forms of the oil, and also brand. Good luck to you and your little one
